about the blue river watershed groupThe Blue River Watershed Group (BRWG) was founded in 2004 by a group of local community members who were passionate about protecting and preserving the health of the Blue River Basin. Our mission is to promote, protect, and restore a healthy Blue River watershed through cooperative community education, stewardship, and resource management. We focus on the entire watershed, which drains an area of about 680 square miles covering all of Summit County and portions of Grand and Lake Counties. Join us in our mission to restore and protect the Blue River, a vital tributary of the Colorado River.

Over the years, we have worked on several important stream restoration projects such as the Tenmile Creek stream restoration project that was completed in 2016 and enhanced floodplain connectivity, fish habitat quality, scenery, and wetlands function, and improved recreational opportunities and public access to the section of Tenmile Creek between the Conoco gas station and Copper Mountain.
Peru Creek, another tributary of the Blue River faces water quality issues from historical mining including restored sites such as the Brittle Silver mine, the Delaware mine, and the Silver Spoon mine. Our efforts to clean up these mines and their tailing piles has resulted in less water infiltration of tailings and reduced leaching of heavy metals into Peru Creek. We developed the Snake River Watershed Plan to manage and help guide the restoration efforts along with local and government partners.
Currently, BRWG is guided by the Integrated Water Management Plan (IWMP) created by BRWG, TU, and key stakeholders in the community. The IWMP serves as a guide to identify and plan restoration projects that will improve the health of the Blue River.
The Swan River Restoration and Native Trout Protection projects are two parts of our ongoing collaborative effort to restore the Swan River from decades of dredge mining. Additionally, we partner with local stakeholders and organizations to educate and promote an understanding of how water in the West is allocated, stored, and managed, we hold outdoor activities to engage the public such as river cleanups, nature walks, cross country ski trips, and help provide environmental education in the community as well.
